You put the airpods through the mouth. There is a loop on the top so its more portable. The size depends on the type of airpods. I was inspired by the crochet car key covers and I noticed that my airpods could go inside one, so I decided to make a smaller version for airpods. It was made with 2 mm yarn and a 4.0 mm crochet hook.
